Electric Cars use the energy stored in a battery (or series of batteries) for vehicle propulsion. Electric motors provide a clean and safe alternative to the internal combustion engine.^[4] Electric cars, with their heavy loads of batteries, were at a distinct disadvantage in these situations which required being pulled, lifted and pried out of these sinkholes. ^[5] Electric cars will reduce our dependency on foreign oil leaving more of our money in our economy so that we have the required capital to develop and introduce clean energy sources. They will put more people back to work so that the tax bases for the various leaching governments expand and states that are on the brink of financial collapse can recover.^[6]

Electric cars are likely to be an important part of the solution. I've been following that community for a few years and I continue to like what I see.^[7] Electric cars don't have to haul 5 kids. The idea of soaring power, feeling like an airplane's effortless takeoff, with maximum power from a standing start, has only been limited by the difficulty of carrying along enough electric energy to drive a long distance.^[12]

Electric cars require a lot of batteries which must be installed in an array and housed in a battery pack. These batteries are heavy (the Tesla Roadster's battery pack weighs 1,000 lbs) and take up a lot of cubic centimeters.^[13]

Batteries consist of two electrodes immersed in an electrolyte that reacts chemically to generation electric current. ^[16] Batteries are the key to the electric car business. The trouble is, lithium ion batteries that are powerful enough to provide a reasonable range?say, 60 to 100 miles on a single charge?and long-lasting enough so that they can be charged and discharged year after year are frightfully expensive.^[17]

Perhaps it's that the car is made out of "airbags" - the same polymer materials used to cushion NASA's rovers when they landed on Mars. Then again, it could be the company's claim that you can drive the car off a cliff without serious injury, and that it will float in a flood or tsunami.^[24] Perhaps an EV as a 2nd car used mainly for commuting. Or perhaps the Chevy Volt that has the low cost of an EV for the first 40 miles plus the range of a gas car when needed.^[25]

Coal gives more bang for the buck; there is more geothermal electricity coming on line in addition to other producers of electricity and natural gas. There will be more electric cars.^[26] Coal all over the world in abundance available and in many countries easy to access can economically be processed into synthetic diesel with the help of nuclear energy. ^[27]

Gasoline won't last for ever. Hybrids are only a mid term solution, and hydrogen is really just a different approach to batteries/energy storage (it costs energy, likely electricity to produce the hydrogen .) The ideal is to jump straight to direct electric storage as quickly as possible.^[28] Gasoline engines are dirtiest when first started and during the first five minutes of operation until their catalytic converters are hot enough to treat exhaust gases. In a major study of NEV user behavior in California several years ago, the Green Car Institute found that NEVs can have a profound impact on lowering overall cold start emissions when used in place of conventional vehicles for regular short trips.^[29]

Thus, BMW's one-year pilot program consisting of just 500 converted electric Mini Coopers leased at an astonishing $850 per month will earn the same full credit as a real vehicle production program. Driver Interface Getting into the car and you get the experience you have entered a technology center. The human vehicle interface is sophisticated, rich, and technically well done.^[51] Drivers of electric cars might in future even be able to select different engine sounds, and maybe download them like ringtones. ^[52]

Nissan says it coats its batteries in a special material that minimizes the risk of overheating and isolates cells that get too hot. In the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, the batteries are protected by both the car's rigid skeleton and a second anti-impact cage.^[53] Nissan is investigating induction charging for stationary applications such as in a garage or parking spot. But the company is also looking at embedding plates into roadways, so that battery powered cars could charge while driving.^[54]

General Motors' much anticipated plug-in hybrid, the Chevy Volt, has been put through its paces in Pomona. ^[58] Generally 4th 5th and reverse are only used. If a direct drive is what you want we can design a special system for you.^[59]

Tesla is currently taking orders for the car, which is expected in late 2011. ^[65] Tesla has a partnership deal with Lotus which results in the building of the cars in the UK. This could be great for the UK economy.^[66]
